Connecting the Montana Sound Unit to a TV

The Montana Sound Unit can connect to a TV through a HDMI cable. This allows passes of video signals from other HDMI devices through the Montana Sound Unit to a television. The sound from the television can also be passed on to the Montana Sound Unit through the same HDMI cable if the television support Audio Return Channel (ARC). Follow the guide below to set up the Montana Sound Unit and a television to communicate audio through ARC or go to the guide in the bottom if your television does not support ARC.

Connect Montana Sound Unit to a TV with ARC

1. Connect a High Speed HDMI Cable between the Montana Sound Unit and the television. Connect to “HDMI Out” on Montana Sound Unit. Connect to the HDMI input on the television with (ARC).

2. Turn on Montana Sound Unit.
3. Turn on ARC by pressing in the middle of the Menu/select wheel on the Montana Sound Unit to enter the Menu and go to System Setup (SysSetup). Choose HDMI and then select ARC. Turn the wheel to “ON” and press Select.
   Setup ARC
4. Turn off Montana Sound Unit and turn on again. This will activate the ARC setting.
5. Turn on television.
6. Montana Sound Unit should be recognised as an Audio Output System from the television and Montana Sound Unit should change input to “ARC-TV”.

Important: Televisions behave differently depending on brand and model. Some televisions may need to be set up to ARC in the television. Please consult the manual of the television or their support in.

Daily use of ARC-TV and CEC

ARC-TV works through CEC (Consumer Electronic Control). This means that commands are send from the television to the Montana Sound Unit and from the Montana Sound Unit to the television. Exact behaviour depends on the brand and model of the television. Below is shown the common behaviour with most televisions:

CEC:

  • Turn on the television will wake the Montana Sound Unit when it is in sleep mode.
  • Turn off the television will make the Montana Sound Unit enter sleep mode.
  • Changing input on the Montana Sound Unit to a HDMI input will change the television to display the Montana Sound Unit as long as the connected HDMI device also supports CEC.
  • Changing volume on television remote control will change volume on the Montana Sound Unit

ARC, all above and also:

  • Choosing a channel on the television will change input to “ARC-TV” on the Montana Sound Unit
  • Changing input on the Montana Sound Unit away from “ARC-TV” does not affect the television, unless an active HDMI input is chosen. Example: Watching TV channel and input is “ARC-TV” so sound from television is on. Changing input on MSU to WiFi to listen to streaming the TV will still show the channel.

Connect Montana Sound Unit to TV with digital cable

If connecting to a television without ARC or even HDMI the sound from the TV can be connected to the Montana Sound Unit through a digital cable, either Coaxial or Optical, depending on the output connection of the TV.

1. Connect a Coaxial or Optical cable from the television to the Montana Sound Unit. Some televisions support Coaxial output, others Optical output. The Coaxial input on the MSU is the orange input.

2. Turn on Montana Sound Unit and Television
3. Change input on Montana Sound Unit to Coaxial or Optical depending on the cable connection made.
4. If the television has HDMI with CEC support (without ARC) the CEC commands listed under Daily use of ARC-TV and CEC will still work.

Important: On some television the digital audio output needs to be activated in the menu. Consult the manual of the television if output audio is not working on default.
